Are you living a myth or becoming a legend?

Stressed-out, overwhelmed, overworked and poor: these are some of the words typically used to describe the lives of graduate students. Fight the myth of the miserable graduate student! This can be a time in your life of enormous flexibility, creativity and pleasure.

During this 10 week workshop you will:

  • Make short and long term plans for a meaningful life
  • Develop more efficient and productive work
  • Learn stress-reduction techniques
  • Develop effective ways for dealing with advisors
  • Understand psychological obstacles that prevent success
  • Overcome procrastination
  • Create support networks
  • Start to write more easily
  • Carve out time for relaxation and play

Participants: Masters or doctoral students in any field and at any phase of their program are welcome. The workshop is also appropriate for students in professional programs such as medicine, law or business.

Facilitator: Mary McKinney, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who has counseled and coached faculty and graduate students, and led dissertation support workshops, for more than a decade. She is currently an adjunct assistant professor at UNC where she teaches "Written Communication" and "Graduate Student Survival Skills."

Date/Time: Wednesday Evenings from 7:30 - 9:00 pm for 10 weeks. NEXT CYCLE TBA.

Fees: The cost is $15 per session, totalling $150 for the entire workshop. Participants are invited to attend the first two sessions to see if the group will be useful, after that, students are asked to commit to the entire workshop so that a cohesive group process may be established. Scholarships are available if needed.
